Google Adsense tips

Need some Google Adsense tips - NOW?!

You've got your site up and running and now you want to make some serious cash.

Are you ready... is your site ready?

Maybe you've already put Adsense ads on your website... but you've got a few questions:

Let's hope some of these tips help you out. Starting off with...

Getting started with Google Adsense

When is it worthwhile to put Google Adsense on my website?
There's no point hoping to earn money from Adsense if you have very few visitors to your site. Let's say you have 20 visitors a day at the moment. If 10% click - that's two visitors. You get 10 cents for each click (you may get less, you may get more.) That's 20 cents for the day. Hardly worth it.

But if you had 200 visitors per day, and 20 clicked, you'd earn $2 a day Which, over a month, is about $60. Not a bad start.

Of course, you won't know how many people will click until you put the ads on. And you won't know what kind of payment you'll get for each click. But - I think it's best if you wait until you have at least 30 good content pages on your site, and around 50 - 100 visitors a day.

So if you have less than 50 visitors a day to your site, you might want to test Adsense on a couple of your pages - but don't expect to be making a lot of money, unless your site is about a topic served by very high paying keywords - which for most of us isn't the case!

How many pages for Google Adsense?
As I've said above, for many sites it's good to build up to around 30 good quality content pages before even thinking about Adsense. That said, I have seen some small sites of around five pages - very specialized topics - with Adsense. And of course there are sites with thousands of pages that have Adsense.

Don't forget that if you are applying to Adsense, your application will be reviewed, and your site checked to ensure it complies with Adsense Program Policies. They want sites with good content and original info - and they don't want to see "under construction" notices, either! Build your site up so that when your site is reviewed, Google will be happy to let you use Adsense on it.

Making money

Do you only get money from Google Adsense if people click on your ads?
Yes.

Can you tell your visitors to click your Adsense ads?
Absolutely not. That's against the Adsense Program Policies.

Which means you're not allowed to write "click an ad" or anything similar. I still see this from time to time. But if Google finds out - your account will be disabled and you won't be able to earn any more money from Adsense.

How can I get visitors to click on Adsense ads?
People do click on ads. In fact, a surprising number of people click on those ads! But first of all....

...you need the traffic.

Build an interesting, attractive site. Do your keyword research. Add new content. Focus on your visitor.

Wait for traffic to build - then apply for Adsense.

Read up on how to optimize your ads for your website. There are many tips within Adsense itself, as well as guides and tutorials available.

So how do you get visitors to click on the ads? You provide them with a great site. That's the most important thing. Then optimize and track the performance of your ads to see what works best.

How much is each click worth on Adsense?
Nobody can tell you that. You can spend all day wondering about

  • the average worth of each click
  • how many clicks will get you $100
  • how much money you'll get paid for each click on ads on your site

- but until you start to use Adsense yourself, you won't know.

And even day to day on a single site, things change. One day, a certain page may make $10 from just two or three clicks. The next day - you get ten clicks and only earn a dollar. It all depends on the advertisers, the time of year, special campaigns, the number of visitors to your page that day, and many other variables.

Can you see how each ad is doing on Adsense?
You can't see how each ad that appears on your site is performing. In any case, you may not be seeing the same ads as a visitor to your site from another state or country. Only advertisers can track the performance of their own individual ads.

But you can certainly track what's happening with the ads on your site. I mainly do URL tracking - in other words, I track the performance of a page on my site with ads on it. I can see what the click through rate is for the ads (or ad) on that page, as well as the earnings for that day. If I make any changes, like adding another ad or changing the colors of the ad text, I will check out whether I'm earning more or less - and so on.

You could create one ad - maybe a 250 x 250 square - and track just that ad with an ad channel.

Or you could create channels to measure ad performance at the top of your pages, or a certain size of ad, or for groups of pages of a similar theme, for example.

How can I increase my Adsense earnings?
Here are some Google Adsense tips for making more money from your site.

If you don't have much time, why not try one tip a week? Track ads then optimize one week, work on increasing traffic the next by getting some links, and so on:

  • Track, optimize, track. As mentioned above, you can track your ads to see how they're doing - then try and optimize the ad a little more - and see if you get more clicks and more earnings

  • You can increase your traffic. More traffic to a page usually results in more income. Providing good content and getting links to your pages will help your pages rank better and get more traffic

  • You can build more pages - adding more and more good content to your site on a regular basis will attract more traffic, as well as giving visitors who are already on your site more to look at. People who might not have clicked on an ad on one page might on another

  • Use Google Webmaster Tools to make sure Google knows about all the pages on your site. These tools, along with traffic stats tools you might use (such as Google Analytics or Statcounter) will tell you about which search queries are driving traffic to your site. Which pages are doing well? Can you write more pages about the same topic to bring in more traffic?

  • Use Adsense reports to spot "hot" pages and topics. If you track your ads per page by using URL channels in Adsense, check your Adsense reports to see which pages are earning you money - or which pages are paying you relatively well, even if there aren't many clicks or visitors. Write more pages around that topic to earn more money.

I hope these Google Adsense tips have given you some food for thought :)
