It's time to research your website niche or topic. Let's start!
Brainstorm a topic
My website package includes a keyword research tool called Brainstormer.
I plug in my website topic idea - hmm... let's say I want to build a site about wedding invitations!
Brainstormer brings back hundreds of keywords about wedding invitations. These are words and phrases that people are searching for online.
This saves hours of research! I can even find out the most popular keywords, and get an idea about how many other quality pages there are out on the web already about each one.
This brainstormer has plenty of online help so that I can understand the numbers. I'm hopeless at math as a general rule, but love my Brainstormer!
Tools like this make everything so much easier; if you already know a lot about your topic, you'll be familiar with a lot of the keywords, and you'll see immediately what people are searching for. And you'll get tons of ideas for pages you can write for your site.
OK - how about making money from this topic? What are the possibilities?
Researching monetization for your site
My brainstorming tool doesn't just spew out keywords - it gives me a place to write notes about each keyword if I get a sudden burst of inspiration... or I can check out the WWW tab to see what sites come up in Google, Yahoo! and Bing for that keyword.
Want to check out how other people are making money in this niche?
I use the Site Info tool to bring me information about the top sites for my topic. I can take a look at what sort of advertising or affiliate programs these websites are using. Yes - it's very interesting to find out how other sites in your niche are making their money!
SearchIt! is also part of Brainstormer - but you can try the public version. Let's say you want to find affiliate programs for wedding invitation products on Google:
Why not try SearchIt! for yourself, and check out your site topic?
Last but not least...
Make a list of possible money-making strategies
Write a list of all the different ways you think you could make money from your topic:
Google Adsense
affiliate programs
ebooks
hard goods
For many topics, there are all sorts of wonderful looking money making ideas. Look at them carefully. Are they just all hype? Are the products good quality? Would you buy them? Are they made and distributed by reputable looking companies?
If you spend some time doing your research, you'll start to get a good idea of what could work for you and your site.
