Keywords are the words or phrases that people type into the search box when they go to Google, Yahoo! or Bing search.

If you want to bake a cake, you might type the following into the search box:

chocolate cake recipe

- so here, chocolate cake recipe is the keyword.

A keyword can be one, two, three words or more

So, people might search for info on the following topics:

  • games (general keyword)

  • football results

  • new york restaurants (more specific keyword)

  • how to stop my dog barking

  • where can I find a good deal on wii fit

Each of these is a keyword - games is a one word keyword and will bring up thousands of results on Google.

Why are keywords so important?

Let's say you want to build a site about glass jewelry. You want to sell items from your site - and maybe you've written enough material for an ebook about the subject that you hope to sell from your site.

But is anybody searching for glass jewelry keywords?

Now - if you were going to set up your own store on a high street in your town - an offline business - you'd want to make sure you got enough customers to your shop wouldn't you? You'd need to do a bit of market research to ensure there was enough demand for your products. Otherwise you could spend time and money opening a store that sold things nobody in town was remotely interested in! No customers - no money.

So how can you find out online demand?

The fab thing about the internet is that there are many tools which can help you discover whether there is demand for your topic. And they can tell you exactly what keywords people are using to find information and products related to glass jewelry.

Keywords such as:

  • glass jewelry boxes

  • glass jewelry pendants

  • glass jewelry display cases

You can then write pages based on these keywords. A page all about boxes, another about the pendants, and so on. Keyword research alone won't help you succeed - but it is an important market research tool for those of you starting out.
